In addition to the marine shaft bearings, Silverline also makes bearings for industrial applications--for hydroelectric turbines, centrifugal pumps used in water, sewage and oil industries, agitator equipment, filtration systems, pulp mills etc.
The company, now part of a larger Icon Polymer Ltd. Group, produces various bearings to operate within aggressive mediums and temparatures that range up to 200 deg C.
SILVERLINE and AQUALINE High Performance Water Lubricated Bearings For Marine Application.
Standard Series
Silverline and Aqualine are brand names of a high precision range of water lubricated marine rubber bearings designed and manufactured by Silvertown UK Ltd., suitable for propeller shafts in stern tubes or struts in all inboard engined vessels.
The exceptional properties of rubber as a bearing material combined with the high performance of their hydrodynamic water wedge design ensure that Silverline bearings are the choice for reliable and maintenance free operation.
The basic design consists of a rubber lining bonded to a shell of metal or composite material. The straight fluted design allows maximum reesistance to abrasive wear.
Lining Materials
The standard lining material is a sythetic nitrile rubber of 65 Shore "A" hardness. This tough compound has been compounded for it's resilence and it's high oil and abrasion resistance. It is suitable for most applications up to 100 deg C. For specialised applications a range of alternative compounds are available.
Shell Materials
The SILVERLINE bearing range standard material of construction is a corrosion resistance naval quality brass to BS2871 Part 2:1972--Alloy CZ126.
Most available metals could be used to fit in with the designer's requirements. Further information on individual shell material properties are avaialble on requests.
Where electrolytic corrosion could be a problem, a non-mettalic shell material is available for use. The AQUALINE bearing range material of construction is a reinforced composite, which offers adequate strength for marine applications.
The composite shell is light, impact resistant, whilst having negligible water absorbtion it will not bind to metal housings or delaminate during installation or maintenace.
Shell outside diameters can be machined to incorporate flanges, collars and most other required design features. Bearings can also be supplied split for ease of installation.
Silvertown uses Composite Shell Grade S7 in the manufacture of Aqualine bearings, which has a proven record in engineering applications as a bearing surface material in various applications, with wear resistance and toughness outlasting conventional materials.
Shaft Clearances
The techniques developed by Silvertown UK Ltd. ensure a strength of bond that matches the strength of the rubber itself.
Bores of all bearings are machined with correct clearances to suit shaft diameters. A standard clearance of 0.1mm per 100mm with tolerance - 0.001~0.004 inch per inch of shaft diameter is specified. This allows for any dimensional change due to water absorbtion to be accomodated and still give sufficient running clearance. For water temperatures in excess of 20 deg C consult us / Silvertown for specific recommendations.
Tolerances
Bearing bores are precision ground for optimum lubrication when fitted with ground shafts to ISO g6. Bearing outside diameters upto 155mm or 6 inch are machined to ISO p6. Bearing outside diameters over 155mm or 6 inch are machined at ISO h6.
